August Safety Campaign – Slips, trips and falls

This month, our safety focus has been on awareness and prevention of slips, trips and falls.

Happsa’s Compliance and Operations teams held several training and refresher sessions for our cleaners on identifying and managing risks of falls.

Happsa’s OHS Compliance Manager Ray Dole said that according to the World Health Organisation, slips, trips and falls are the second leading cause of unintentional on-the-job fatalities.

“All flooring has the potential to contribute to slips, trips and falls. However, floors with a poorly applied or inappropriate finish, or that are badly worn or dirty, may be most risky.”

“One of the main tasks performed by cleaners is wet floor mopping. Whilst performing cleaning tasks such as wet floor mopping or any type of cleaning that requires the use of water, it is vital to make people aware of potential hazards with signage to minimise incidents and mitigate potential liability when incidents occur.”

“The use of adequate signage to alert others of wet areas created when mopping or due to wet weather to prevent slips and falls is essential because wet areas present as a high-risk activity which must be controlled to prevent and minimise hazards,” said Ray.

Each month our OHS Compliance team run Safety Campaigns with differing topics with operational staff (site supervisors and cleaners). Staff are reminded and reinstructed on Occupational Health and Safety topics.
